Samuel John Barnes
1847-1901
Samuel John Barnes was a British landscape painter.
He was born in Birmingham where he studied at the
Birmingham School of Art and later in London.
Some
of Barnes's best paintings were of Scottish highland
landscapes including highland cattle and red deer.
He painted in the vicinity of Royal Deesside (Balmoral
Castle) where his paintings were highly regarded
by Queen Victoria and also by Queen Alexandra.
Exhibited: Royal Academy 1884, 1886.

The provenance of these Samuel John Barnes paintings is
impeccable. In 1896 they were part of a series of paintings
inspected by Royalty when The Duke and Duchess of Saxe-Coberg
made a purchase.

"The Princess of Wales
honoured Mr. S. J. Barnes by purchasing one of his pictures
from series he had the honour of submitting to Her Royal
Highness, at Mar Lodge, Aberdeenshire, residence of
His Grace the Duke of Fyfe, in October, 1896. Their
Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Saxe-Coburg
honoured Mr. S. J. Barnes on Dec. 9th, 1896, by inspecting
at Clarence House, St. James's, London, his Scottish
Pictures. Her Imperial Highness The Duchess honoured
Mr. Barnes by selecting and purchasing from the series."
